Opera Gala at Uluru

Opera Gala at Uluru

from $750 2 night package

Under a vast canopy of stars, at the very centre of our continent, an evening of soaring emotion awaits.

For the first time ever, Opera Australia will perform an exclusive concert in the spiritual heart of Australia, with the vast outback plains and Bruce Munro’s Field of Light as the backdrop. The special gala performance, held under the stars, on Saturday 2 November promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a marriage of sublime art with a uniquely Australian setting.

"I was so profoundly moved when I first visited - moved by a sense of awe, and spirituality that is palpable, and by the raw beauty of the landscape. Opera Australia is honoured to be presenting our first ever performance at Australia’s spiritual centre, on the sacred lands surrounding Uluru.” Lyndon Terracini, Opera Australia Artistic Director

It will be a celebration of Uluru’s manifold wonders from singers belonging to one of the world’s most renowned opera companies. Natalie Aroyan, Lorina Gore, Angela Hogan, Diego Torre and Haotian Qi will sing two acts’ worth of the most popular arias – including Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma”; the “Habanera” from Carmen; and the hauntingly beautiful “Au fond du temple saint” from Bizet’s “The Pearlfishers” – accompanied by a chamber orchestra and conducted by Tahu Matheson.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the desert’s intense colours will change from luminous orange to deep purple. It’s a splendid sight, with a magical soundtrack to match.

Mani Mani Indigenous Cultural Theatre

Mani-Mani Theatre Company’s unique sound, lighting, 3D effects and performance take you on a visually captivating experience transporting you to the ancient lands of Central Australia where the story of Walawuru, Kakalyalya & Kaanka unravels. The symbolic story of Walawuru, Kakalyalya & Kaanka is a tale of love, jealousy and greed. Expressed through ‘Mani-Mani’, the local art form of storytelling, this contemporary Indigenous performance brings to life the ancient ancestral beings Walawuru the Wedge-Tailed Eagle and his two wives; Kaanka the black crow and Kakalyalya the white cockatoo. Walawuru is happy with his two wives but little does he know Kaanka is evil and very jealous of the kind and caring Kakalyalya. The word ‘Mani-Mani’ comes from the Yankunytjatjara & Pitjantjatjara language of the Anangu people of Central Australia. Anangu people would often tell stories by drawing symbols in the sand using a stick taken from a branch of the Mani-Mani tree. The stories were often about ancestors, real events in history and the Tjukurpa creation time. Tour duration: approx. 40 minutes.
